Happy New Year! For some, the new year can be a time to refresh and reset. For many living with a mental illness, it can be a reminder that mental illness doesn’t go away with the start of a new day or a new year.
It is this time of year that we get the most questions about how to start finding help, how effective it is, and how to get it affordably. If you are asking one of these questions, let us help!
1. Does treatment work? Is it effective?
Yes, treatment works…people recover! In the past two decades, the recovery movement has blossomed, while treatment and support services for mental illness have improved significantly. Additionally, advancements in medications are continually improving the recovery rate of individuals with a mental illness. More and more people are receiving treatments that allow them to recover and lead healthy, successful, and independent lives. Some of the highest recovery rates include Bipolar Disorder (80%), Major Depression (70%), Panic Disorder (70%), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (70%), Schizophrenia (60%).
Research shows that the success rates for addiction treatment are equal to the success rates for other chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. Approximately 40 – 60% of individuals who complete chemical dependency treatment and attend self-help groups (such as Alcoholics Anonymous) are likely to remain abstinent from alcohol or other drugs.

3. How can I get affordable help? Are any services free?
Each one of our community partner agencies offer their programs and services at different rates but they all have one thing in common – making it affordable for you. Each agency operates on the following payment policy: “If we have proof of income or a lack of income, we can review whether you qualify for a sliding fee scale to see if the cost of services can be reduced. We have funding options to help cover services, such as the support we receive from our local Mental Health and Recovery Board.” In addition to this, all of the agencies accept a variety of insurance plans and policies, and some even offer services for free.
