Resources for Grief Management

The Mental Health & Recovery Board of Wayne & Holmes Counties, along with our funded partner agencies, focus a lot of our attention and programming on suicide prevention. However, a group that sometimes seems untouched is those grieving the loss of a family member due to suicide. They are suicide loss survivors.

Grieving is a natural emotional response to loss. Grieving for the loss of a loved one can be an extremely intense, emotional, and, quite frankly, exhausting experience. The act of grieving can be quite taxing mentally, emotionally, and physically. It’s not unusual for the grief experience, and the pain associated with the loss, to feel overwhelming and never-ending.

How people grieve often depends on many different factors, including their typical coping mechanisms, their individual personality, belief system, and support community. It is important to remember and remind individuals going through this experience that there is no right or wrong way to grieve, nor is there a set timeline for grieving. Grief is a process that, much like any journey, will take time.

Learning more about the different emotions and the grieving process can help you through your own grieving journey.

This month, as we focused on grief, we wanted to pair those thoughts with the Ohio Suicide Loss Survivor’s Guide, created and provided by the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation. Download the guide here for more information and ideas to help in your healing.

Our funded partner agencies are all available to help with this topic. Each one offers therapy and counseling, with a unique and individual approach. You can find more specialized summaries about their services here:

They will help to remind you that this is a journey and it is okay for you to take breaks and deep breaths along the way. Grieving is a process. Be gentle with yourself. Be nurturing. This will take time.
